DAY TRIPS FROM ST. JOHN:

St. John, U.S. Virgin Island is a wonderful small gem of an island that offers visitors much in terms of beaches and relaxation and is a wonderful spot for enjoying numerous day trips.

St. John does not have an airport, so visitors must arrive via public ferry or private boat.  Most visitors arrive to St. John from nearby St. Thomas.  The island of St. Thomas makes for a wonderful day trip from St. John and offers visitors a myriad of activities.  The island is well known for it's fabulous duty-free shopping where visitors can purchase excellent bargains on jewelry, perfume, linens and small electronics.  Visitors to St. Thomas for the day might, also, want to enjoy a day playing golf at Mahogany Run because there is no golf course on St. John.

HISTORY OF ST. JOHN:

St. John is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and was first settled by the Arawack Indians who migrated from Columbia and Venezuela around AD 300.  The Arawaks lived on the island until around AD 1300 when they were driven off bit the warring Carib Indians. 

History credits Christopher Columbus with being the first European to see the Virgin Islands during his Second Voyage to the New World in 1493.  Columbus named the group of islands " O nce Mil Virgenes" or Eleven Thousand Virgins after the fe a st day of St. Ursula and the 11,000 virgins who it was said were martyred with her.

The Danish West India and Guinea Company settled the island in 1672 and they are credited with naming the island St. John.  In 1718, the Dane's constructed a fort in Coral Bay.  In 1754, the Danish took full control of the colony as well as neighboring St. Thomas and St. Croix. 

The Dane's established massive sugar plantations  with such crops as sugar, tobacco and cotton to include the famous Annaberg Sugar Plantation.  To support the sugar plantations, they imported many, many African slaves. The slave population was so  large that by 1755 it was estimated that slaves outnumbered the Danish settlers by 5 to 1.   St. John would later become the site of one of the first major slave rebellions in the New World in 1733 when they captured the island for six months.  Eventually, the Danish were able to defeat the Africans with the help from the French.  Many of the rebels chose to commit suicide at Ram's Head on St. John where as many as 300 slaves jumped to their deaths from the cliffs rather than risk re-capture and torture.  It was not until 1848 that slavery was finally abolished.

In 1917, the U.S. bought the Virgin Islands for 25 million for all three islands (St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix).  The islands were bought with the intention of establishing a naval base to prevent the Germans from expanding into the Western hemisphere.

Today, the residents of the Virgin Islands are U.S. citizens although they are not able to vote in presidential elections and have non-voting status in Congress.  The Virgin Islands, however, are an unincorporated territory of the US and have their own Governor and a fair amount of self rule.

Laurence Rockefeller donated most of the island of St. John in 1956 to the U.S. National Park Service under the condition that it be protected from future development.  Today, the Virgin Islands National Park occupies 75% of the island and much of the island's waters, coral reefs and shores are protected by inclusion within the park.

BEST BEACHES IN THE CARIBBEAN ON ST. JOHN:

St. John has some of the very best beaches in the entire Caribbean!  The island boasts fine, sugar white sand beaches that meet crystal clear calm waters.  The beaches on the island are some of the most secluded in the Caribbean as well.

Maho Bay and Francis Bay are located in close proximity to Cinnamon Bay and both bays are easy to reach and offer delightful swimming and snorkeling.

Salt Pond Bay and Lameshur Bay are located on the less crowded south coast of the island.  They, too, offer nice sand and clear calm ocean for great swimming and snorkeling.  Neither of these beaches has an facilities, so they are ideal for brining a picnic.

The Caneel Bay Resort boasts 7 beaches but only one, Caneel Bay Beach, is open to the public.    The beach is pretty and has a seaside restaurant.

The staff members each work six days per week.  The cooks are available to prepare, serve and clean up three full meals per day six days per week.  The housekeeper/laundress is available six days per week to tidy up the villa, keep the bathrooms sparkling clean, the linens fresh and the guest's laundry freshly cleaned and pressed.

Indeed, a typical day starts out when guests awaken to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.  Guests will come to the breakfast table and enjoy a variety of fresh fruits with their coffee.  Shortly afterwards, freshly squeezed juices, teas, breakfast breads, eggs, pancakes, waffles etc. will be served.

Afterwards, guests typically retreat to their room to change into their bathing suits and go outside to their private pool.  During this time, the staff cleans up the breakfast dishes and while the guests are outside, the housekeeper cleans the villa and the rooms and take care of the laundry.  Freshly cleaned and pressed clothes re-appear the next day to the guest's delight.

Lunches are prepared and served to guests frequently outside on furnished verandahs or by the private pool.  The lunches will often feature freshly prepared salads and grilled items and lots of fresh fruit.

Dinner can be served either in the formal dining room of the villa by candlelight or guests may choose to dine alfresco under the moon and stars by their private pool.
