Belize is the jewel of the Caribbean for many good reasons. Mangrove swamps and cays along the coast give way to large hills and mountains in the interior with the highest point being Victoria Peak at 3,681 ft.

The Maya were characterized by a short, muscular stature and red skin and were known for building great temples, tools, pottery, and many scholastic achievements that changed the world. The Mayans were great astronomers and created a calender as well as many mathematical concepts including the concept of zero. The Mayans raised corn along with tobacco, caco, cotton and other crops. Many Maya settlements were still thriving when contact with the Europeans was made.
